Abstract

Forest and land fires occur every year in South Sumatra Province, including Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) Regency which has the largest peatland. One way to minimize the impact of disasters is to improve disaster literacy skills. This study aims to determine the level of disaster literacy of students, the effect of disaster literacy and geography learning on preparedness for forest and land fire disasters. The method used is a survey. The number of samples studied were 234 students of grade 11 and 12 SMA in Ogan Komering Ilir Regency. The findings show that the general disaster literacy level of students can be categorized as high in each forest and land fire prone zone. In addition, there is an influence of disaster literacy and geography subjects in disaster mitigation materials on the preparedness of students in dealing with disasters, although the effect is quite small. Recommendations from this research are that policy makers carry out disaster simulations and seminars consistently, as well as deepen material on disaster mitigation in the school curriculum.
