Abstract


This study is conducted based on students difficulties in finding meanings, the ir reluctancy to open dictionaries due to time consumption, unavailability of lexicography in curriculum, and the lack of willingness of Arabic teachers to arrange any bilingual dictionaries for beginners. In fact, dictionaries play an important role in teaching and learning Arabic language in any levels of schooling. This study aims to describe the use of Indonesian-Arabic bilingual dictionary, its users' perception, the external evaluation, and its pedagogical implications. The method used is literature study supported with quantitative data. The recourses of data include three Arabic-Indonesian bilingual dictionaries and 2 Indonesian-Arabic dictionaries with their best features, survery questionnaire to 173 users. and interview. The results of the study show that, 1) users find difficulties in determining head of entr: morphological aspect covering finding roots of words, semantic aspect covering the difficulties of finding appropriately contextual words, and unfamiliarity with the dictionaries features: 2) more than 50% of the users find it ineffective to use dictionaries so thai they need a training: 3) the results of evaluation show that every dictionary has its own characteristics; however, not all of the dictionaries have the necessary features included: and 4) the existence of training on how to use dictionaries seems to be necessary for university students.
